Stepping the rear foot past the front foot, usually off the line, so that the cut arrives with the step.
Most cuts are thrown with a passing step. The foot on the sword's side comes forward as the cut lands, and stepping slightly off the line of the opponent's attack moves your body out of their cut while yours arrives. In the scenarios, "step out to the right" always means a passing step off the line.
