A low guard beside the hip with the point behind, from which rising and crooked cuts are thrown.
Hold the sword at the side with the point down and back. The guard hides the blade and invites an attack; the answer is a rising cut, a or a thrust that comes from below the opponent's view. It is one of Meyer's secondary guards and appears in the Liechtenauer tradition as a position passed through at the end of a cut.
Sources and interpretation
- Joachim Meyer (1570) interpretive Meyer gives the side guard a full treatment with devices from it; the earlier glosses mention the position only in passing. Gründtliche Beschreibung der Kunst des Fechtens (1570), Wiktenauer page
